Children have learned to keep their physical distance and may worry about being near people who don’t live in their household.  The classroom setup may be different than they remember.

Those that still need to wear masks won’t be able to see full facial expressions that can help bring reassurance.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), ‘teachers, parents, and programs can help children by planning the transition, making strong connections, and establishing new routines.’

The best approach for parents is to be patient and supportive.

Below is advice from the CDC on a successful return to the classroom!

Source:

  • Request an in-person meeting outside on the playground to let the child meet the teacher and other children before school starts.
  • Learn more about your child’s school and how they incorporate social-emotional learning.
  • Connect with other parents who have children in the same program who can provide information and make them more comfortable with the program.
  • Keep goodbyes at the start of the school day brief and positive.
  • Use a calm voice and stay relaxed when discussing school.
  • Establish a daily routine: healthy meals and good sleep are very important.
  • Building new relationships is a learned skill, be patient with your child!
  • Talk to a healthcare professional if symptoms of anxiety or behavior problems are severe or persistent.
